Hungry for Lower Auto Insurance? Pay Attention
People who want to save money on their auto insurance should remember that eating behind the wheel can be just as dangerous as texting while driving when it comes to causing accidents.
Much of this year has seen a heavy focus on the dangers of distracted driving, largely texting and using cell phones behind the wheel. However, this isn't the only form of distracted driving to be wary of.
A Boston Globe report this week spoke to several people who acknowledge eating while driving. One woman told the newspaper about a fellow motorist she spotted drinking espresso from a little china cup, while a college student acknowledged in the report that she occasionally eats pizza and uses her cell phone while driving.
The report cited the widespread availability of drive-thru food at various fast food restaurants, and noted that many drivers feel it is safer to eat behind the wheel if utensils or both hands are not required to do so.
Still, to avoid causing accidents that can cause injuries and drive up one's auto insurance, the best strategy may be to simply put down the burrito and drive.
