Proper Winter Preparations Can Mean Lower Home Owner Insurance Quote

Winter weather might be just around the corner, but consumers still have time to take steps that will save them money and help guarantee a low home owner insurance quote.

During the winter months, homes can be more susceptible to claims and damage in general because of things like roof damage from snowstorms and damage caused by things like ice dams and severe weather.

With that in mind, the Insurance Information Institute recently noted that the average claim for damage from water and freezing damage is now about $5,531, and represent 22 percent of all home insurance claims in the country. The organization adds that winter storms accounted for about 8 percent of all catastrophic losses nationwide between 1989 and 2008.

Homeowners should take the time now to make sure their houses are properly winterized to minimize the chance of damage from burst pipes or even fire dangers brought on by heating and other factors.

With that in mind, some tips include keeping gutters clear and trimming trees and dead branches on one's property. Homeowners should also seal any cracks in their foundations or outside walls.
People who choose to invest in other features such as fire safety and burglar alarms, will also often find that their next home owner insurance quote is lower.
