Insurance Commissioners Advise Consumers to Know Their Policies Well

A recent survey by the National Association of Insurance Commissioners says that 61 percent of customers say they understand their right to appeal a claim that is denied, while only about one-third of them said they understood how the costs of their premiums are factored.

"By getting smart about their policies and tapping into the resources available, consumers will be more confident about their insurance choices and learn to make cost-effective decisions without sacrificing important coverage needs," said NAIC President Roger Sevigny.

With these things in mind, the group advises consumers to carefully research a policy before buying it and to understand details like how an out-of-network doctor can make a difference in costs. Another tip offered by the group is to take advantage of open enrollment periods to make any needed changes in benefits and programs.

The group also reminds health insurance patients that their own state's insurance department is another good resource to look to when seeking out information or filing a consumer complaint.
