Smart Snacking Key to a Healthy Diet

People are often reminded that one way to maintain low health insurance rates and avoid chronic medical conditions is to follow the right dietary guidelines.

However, one important point that may be occasionally overlooked is that in some cases, snacks can have far more calories and fat than entire meals. One such example is movie theater popcorn, according to the Center for Science in the Public Interest.

The group recently announced that a person who purchases a medium popcorn and soda combo at one leading theater chain is getting three times the daily recommendation (20 grams) of saturated fat consumption. Along with 60 grams of fat, the combo is said to have 1,610 calories.

One factor in high fat content for movie theater popcorn focuses on whether it is cooked in coconut oil. The group praised one company, Cinemark, for using corn popped in lower-fat canola oil.

Overall, important strategies for eating healthy and keeping in good physical condition include making the right decisions about snacking and being aware of the nutritional content of one's favorite snack foods.
