Holiday Season Can Mean More Road Fatalities

The start of the holiday season is a good time to remind people of the importance of safe driving, due to factors like heavy traffic and what often turns out to be a larger number of impaired drivers on the roads.

In fact, a recent report by Forbes notes that many people may be surprised to learn that Thanksgiving is actually considered to be the most dangerous holiday of the year from a driving standpoint.

The article notes that 502 people died nationwide last year in Thanksgiving auto accidents, which is dramatically higher than the average daily figure of 102. The next most dangerous holidays for drivers are said to be Labor Day and Independence Day, while an average of 550 Americans die in holiday crashes each year.

Along with traffic and alcohol, another factor in these statistics is said to be the longer driving time put in by many people on these holidays.

Another thing to consider is that when taking long road trips for the holidays, some people choose to rent a car. With that in mind, the Insurance Information Institute advises people to carefully check their existing policies to know the extent of their coverage if they should be involved in a crash while driving a rental.
