Power Windows May be an Overlooked Auto Safety Issue

Parents of small children need to be especially conscious of safety when they're behind the wheel, from avoiding distracted driving to ensuring that safety seats are properly used.

However, the advocacy group KidsAndCars.org is warning that a possibly overlooked safety issue in many vehicles is power windows. According to the organization, far more people are injured by power windows than government statistics actually report.

The group says that the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration reports less than 2,000 people are injured by power windows, which has led to the conclusion that safety features like auto reversing systems do not need to be mandated on vehicles.

However, KidsAndCars.org claims that there are actually "tens of millions" of injuries traceable to power windows each year, which it cites as a reason to mandate the power window safety features.
The group goes on to say that more than 13 million Americans have injured somebody with a car window, while more than 22 million say they have either been injured or know someone who has been injured by a power window.

Regardless of which statistics regarding power windows are most accurate, parents have a veritable juggling act when it comes to safe driving with small children.
