For many people, home insurance is something that only comes to mind when it's time to file a claim. However, it can be just as important to spot warning signs that future repairs will be needed, especially since many policies do not cover problems brought on by neglect or a lack of maintenance.
With that in mind, a recent report by Kiplinger's personal finance lays out some common warning signs that people need to be aware of as they shop for a home.
Some of the problems cited in the article included poor water pressure because this can be a sign of pipe corrosion. Other warning signs include ceiling stains that could indicate the possibility of a leaky roof, and doors that do not open easily because they may be a sign of structural problems.
Finally, Kiplinger's advises people to be wary of any odors that could reveal issues like mold or other things.
Elsewhere, the Insurance Information Institute notes that typical home insurance policies will not cover wear and tear on a home, further illustrating the importance of keeping a sharp eye out for potential maintenance headaches before purchasing a new home.
