Holidays Can Bring Greater Risk of House Fires

12/18/2009

Millions of Americans are enjoying holiday decorations and other cheerful seasonal traditions, but they may not be aware of the safety hazards that can confront them in the process, especially when it comes to things like Christmas trees.

The National Fire Protection Association recently offered homeowners some safety tips that can help avert tragedy and unwanted calls to their home insurance company about property damage and other difficulties.

According to the organization, those who choose to purchase a fresh Christmas tree should avoid ones where the needles are falling off, and they should place the trees in a way that does not block exits. Artificial trees may present less of a fire hazard, but people should also remember to look for flame-retardant ones.

When lighting the trees, people should never use candles to do so, and any strings of lights should be free of broken cords and loose bulb connections. The trees should also be kept at least three feet away from any heat source.

Homeowners should also dispose of their fresh trees promptly after Christmas so they don't have a chance to dry out and become even more flammable. Another important thing to avoid is burning up a Christmas tree in a fireplace because this can greatly elevate the risk of a chimney fire.
