Homeowners have long known that their insurance rates can be heavily affected by the city and region they happen to live in, due to a number of reasons such as crime, health statistics and natural disaster risk.
With these things in mind, a major insurance company has released its annual list of the most secure places in the United States for people to live in, with categories broken down by the size of a given area.
According to the 2009 data, the most secure large metro areas were the Austin-Round Rock, Texas area; the Des Moines area; and Madison, Wisconsin. Other large cities making up the top ten included Rochester and Syracuse, both in New York, and Honolulu, Hawaii.
For middle sized cities, Fargo-Moorhead, on the North Dakota/Minnesota line led the way, followed by Olympia, Washington and Sioux Falls, South Dakota. Washington state had four cities listed in the top 11 mid-sized secure cities, while Minnesota had three.
Among small cities, the Lewiston, Idaho/Clarkston, Washington area was the leader, followed by State College, Pennsylvania and Bismarck, North Dakota. Other secure small cities for homeowners included Logan, Utah, Ithaca, New York and Corvallis, Oregon.
