Candles Can Present Serious Fire Dangers

12/23/2009

Two leading safety organizations have teamed up to remind families of the fire hazards that candles can present, especially during the holiday season.

According to Safe Kids USA and the U.S. Fire Administration, 450 children under age 14 die each year in residential fires, and those under age 5 are at the greatest risk for such tragedies.

"Never, never leave lit candles unattended. Don't put candles on a tree or a natural wreath, or near curtains or drapes, and keep matches and lighters locked out of reach of children," said Suzanne Morton of Safe Kids USA.

The group noted that candles were thought to have caused about 15,600 home fires nationwide in 2005, and that the four days of the year where the risk was highest were around Christmas and New Year's Day.

One safe alternative may be battery-operated flameless candles, according to Safe Kids USA. Consumers are also reminded that the holidays can carry other fire dangers, from dried out Christmas trees to unattended space heaters and stoves. By taking some simple precautions, people can reduce the danger of serious injuries as well as unfortunate home insurance claims.
