Drunken Driving Dangers Rise Dramatically On New Year's Eve

12/30/2009

People need to be wary of drunken drivers any time of year, but on occasions such as New Year's Eve, the problem becomes more pronounced than ever.

According to the National Institute on Alcohol Abuse and Alcoholism, people are more than four times likely to be injured in alcohol-related crashes on New Year's Eve than any other mid-week evening during the winter.

One New Jersey-based nonprofit organization, Citizens United Reciprocal Exchange, is reminding people to be extra alert on roads and highways, even if they choose not to drink at all. Other tips include checking with local bars, community organizations and other institutions for safe rides home - as well as simply planning ahead to responsibly secure transportation after a night out.

People who host parties and serve alcohol also need to be cautious about guests driving home drunk, especially since they can also be held legally accountable in some states and circumstances.

Those who are caught drinking and driving, regardless of whether they cause an accident, can expect large fines and legal fees, as well as possible jail time depending on their record. Their auto insurance prices will also rise substantially for a number of years because of such a serious blemish on their safe driving record.
