Consumers Advised to Shop Carefully for Health Insurance

02/02/2010

Consumers are under more pressure than ever to find an affordable health insurance plan, but if they fail to shop around carefully, they run the risk of ending up with a plan that doesn't suit their needs.

For example, insurance experts often advise people to know exactly what a policy covers and, in the case of high-deductible premiums, to be sure they can actually pay the ensuing medical bills in the event of an emergency.

According to a recent ABC News report, there are several other factors to be wary of when shopping for health insurance. For example, some companies simply turn out to be fly-by-night outfits that collect as much money as they can before disappearing.

Other questionable policies may fail to provide sufficient coverage in the event of a specific major medical problem like cancer or a heart attack. Consumers are also advised to be wary of plans with substantially lower premiums than the rest of the industry tends to offer, as well as companies that claim to ask no questions about pre-existing conditions. Another warning sign is said to be health plans advertised by spam emails, telemarketers, fliers, or "cheap-looking" television commercials.

With these things in mind, consumers have more reasons than ever to take their time, shop carefully and to especially read the fine print when shopping around for health insurance.
