Weather Events Most Common Source of Home Insurance Claims

02/03/2010

A recent study of Texas homeowner insurance claims shows some of the issues that policyholders may be most likely to deal with.

The study, conducted by a major insurance company, found that water, wind and hail damage were the three most common sources of homeowner insurance claims in the state.

This may vary in other regions of the country. For example, some western states, particularly in the Rocky Mountains, are known for their prodigious hail storm that can damage homes and vehicles. In other parts of the country, damage caused by ice and snow is likely to be much more of a factor.

While property damage is obviously a common concern for any homeowner, the report sheds some light on the other issues that may confront them from an insurance standpoint. For example, liability claims, fire and dog bites were said to be the three most expensive individual claims from an insurance perspective, at least among Texas residents.

This serves as a reminder that along with keeping a home as shielded from the elements as possible, homeowners also want to take additional steps to protect themselves financially, such as keeping dogs properly restrained and ensuring that their coverage protects them for activities like hosting parties and home-based business activities.
