Various Changes Can Bring About Lower Auto Insurance Rates

02/07/2010

Many drivers are constantly on the lookout for lower auto insurance prices, although in some cases, they don't have to switch companies to start saving money.

For example, the Insurance Information Institute notes that something as simple as joining a carpool can result in lower premiums. This is because many companies offer discounts for people who drive fewer miles on average. With that in mind, people who work from home offices some or all of the time, or who take public transportation, should also inquire with their insurers.

However, the I.I.I notes that people who are driving the carpool to work or who bring other children to school or to activities should also be sure that their liability coverage is sufficient.

Another frequent trigger for lower auto insurance prices is retirement, since a number of companies tend to provide discounts for drivers once they reach a certain age.

For parents of teenagers, premiums often end up rising. However, the institute advises people that they can save money by adding their teens to their own premiums as opposed to purchasing new policies. This could trigger a multi-car discount as well. Another factor in auto insurance pricing for families with teens is the type of car a young driver has.
