Winter Brings More than Just Snow Risks

When it comes to maintaining proper home insurance coverage and performing the necessary maintenance, homeowners would do well to remember that severe weather can affect them in any part of the country.

This week's blizzard in the Middle Atlantic states captured national news headlines with a snowfall total that exceeded 30 inches in some places, setting new records. Along with resulting in cancelled flights and blocked traffic, homeowners in these areas were at a greater risk for damage in the form of collapsed roofs, frozen pipes and ice damage.

However, this was just one example of the difficulties that winter weather can bring for homeowners and their insurance companies.

In fact, as the blizzard was underway on the East Coast, California was experiencing its own difficulty with heavy rains that produced mudslides in some areas, inflicting a different kind of damage threat on local homes.

Regardless of which part of the country a person lives in, it makes sense to keep track of the details of one's home insurance coverage to ensure proper protection in the event of a severe weather event.
