Much of the country has been affected by major snowstorms in the past couple of weeks, which provides a good opportunity to remind people of the steps they can take to avoid property damage that can result in unwanted homeowner insurance claims.
The Mid-Atlantic states were buried under a major blizzard during Super Bowl weekend and within several days were facing another potentially large snowstorm that was also expected to affect a significant portion of the Midwest and New England regions.
With these things in mind, the Restoration Industry Association is advising homeowners that some ways to minimize potential damage are to focus on keeping moisture away from the house by removing snow or water from basement window wells. Other tips include creating barriers of packed snow around basement windows to avoid water running indoors, while also clearing snow from doors and window areas.
Homeowners are also advised to be wary of snow-covered trees that can drop branches and cause property damage, and keeping drains and gutters clear of debris. Winter weather is also a time to pay more attention to the dangers presented by space heaters and fireplaces.
Winter weather is a common source of property damage and homeowner insurance claims, but people who take some basic preventive steps can significantly reduce their own risk.
