Residents of some states may be more at risk than others for damage from winter weather that requires additional maintenance to avoid having to file homeowner insurance claims.
Much of the U.S. has seen its share of harsh weather this winter, but on an annual basis, a recent report by Forbes notes that some cities are more prone than others to heavy snowfall and cold temperatures, as well as high rates of precipitation in general.
According to the financial magazine, Cleveland has the worst weather on average, with an average annual temperature of 49.6 degrees Fahrenheit and 38.7 inches of precipitation to accompany 58.9 annual inches of snowfall. The rest of the top five consisted of Boston, New York City, Milwaukee and Chicago.
A number of other cities in the Midwest and Northeast were cited as leading the way in harsh weather, although most parts of America have their own risk factors for homeowners, from wildfires in western states to storms in the South.
With these things in mind, people who take added steps to weatherproof their property will often find that they are eligible for discounts from their home insurance companies.
