Consumers Can Avoid Problems by Knowing how to File Auto Insurance Claims

Consumers who know how to handle insurance claims may be able to protect against additional harm after an accident.

The New York State Insurance Department suggests that consumers keep their auto insurance identification and contact information with them at all times. Following an accident, the first thing they should do is take care of injuries, then report it to the police.

Taking the information of all people and vehicles involved will help in settling claims. The state's insurance superintendent James Wrynn suggested photographing the scene as well.

"It's always important to drive safely, but it's also important to know how to file a claim just in case you're in an accident or your car is damaged in some other manner," Wrynn said. "It will go a long way in helping you avoid unnecessary problems."

Whether the vehicle is a total loss or lightly damaged, there are certain steps a consumer should take after an accident, according to the insurance department. If they need to have the auto fixed, drivers may choose a collision repair shop recommended by their insurer. Consumers can request insurers to cover these costs - and the cost of a total loss, if damages are greater than the vehicle is worth.
