With hurricane season approaching, there are several steps homeowners should take in order to minimize damage and reduce the recovery period incurred after a storm.
The Insurance Information Institute offered advice for those who live in coastal areas and along the path of such storms. The first step is having the right coverage. Homeowners should meet with their insurer to review their policy and make sure it covers any recent additions they have made to their property.
Those living along a body of water or in a flood plain should also look into flood insurance. This covers water damage and can be purchased through the National Flood Insurance Program. Taking inventory of one's possessions may reduce the amount of time it takes to file claims after a storm, while installing storm shutters and reinforced garage doors may cut claim costs.
"Those who take the time to prepare for a hurricane stand the best chance of surviving the storm and getting back to their normal lives in a timely manner," Jeanne Salvatore, national consumer spokesperson for III, said.
Homeowners should also establish an evacuation plan and emergency kit including medicine, water, their home inventory, identifying documents and clothing. Practicing their evacuation plan can help determine its feasibility.
