Oklahoma Legislators Seek Safety Improvement for Motorcyclists

04/07/2010

Driving on two wheels instead of four is just one way motorcyclists put their lives at risk when navigating the nation's roadways.

Eighty-seven of these individuals were killed while driving in Oklahoma in 2008, according to statistics from the state's highway safety office, prompting legislators to improve motocrycle safety. HB 2264 "Gunner's Bill" was recently passed in the state's legislature and now awaits signature from Governor Brad Henry.

The bill, which was named after a motorcyclist who died in a truck accident last year, will make it more expensive to register a motorcycle. Starting November 1, a $3 fee will be tacked on to the current cost of registering such a vehicle in Oklahoma. These funds will go toward increasing motorcycle safety and education.

A separate bill originating in the Oklahoma Senate will establish an Advisory Committee for Motorcycle Safety and Education.

Motorcycle claims are not covered through auto insurance, but consumers are often able to turn to their automobile insurer for motorcycle coverage. Beyond liability insurance, motorcyclists may pick and choose coverage most suitable to their individual needs. Other options include collision coverage, comprehensive coverage and uninsured/underinsured motorist coverage.
