With this in mind, Verizon Wireless has offered advice for Florida residents who will soon face hurricane season. Creating a list of emergency phone numbers - like home insurance agents, power companies, police and fire departments and family and friends - is one way to reduce communication difficulties following a natural disaster.
Consumers should also conserve their mobile devices' battery power by sticking to text messages over voice calls and free up networks for emergency operations by limiting non-emergency phone calls. They may also want to store chargers and extra batteries in a dry location, according to Verizon.
"Preparation is vital for staying safe in emergencies, and Florida residents have enough time now to make proper plans before the storm season hits," Pam Tope, Florida regional president for Verizon Wireless, said.
A recent report by the Colorado State University hurricane forecast team indicated that coastal residents are in for an above-average hurricane season this year, with a 69 percent chance of a major storm striking U.S. shores.
