Despite the extensive property damage associated with flash floods, torrential rains and hurricanes, many Americans are not prepared to endure such weather conditions, according to a recent America THINKS survey by HNTB Corporation.
Fifty-five percent of respondents said their property or neighborhood would suffer severe damage in the event of a major storm, hurricane or flooding, with Southerners significantly more concerned than those living in Western states. More than half of the survey's respondents think two-thirds of the nation's levees are in need of repair.
However, 22 percent of respondents reported having flood insurance, while twice this number had never consider purchasing such protection. This insurance covers losses incurred from water damage, and can be purchased through the Federal Emergency Management Agency's National Flood Insurance Program.
"Additional education is needed to inform the public of the true threats in their region and what can be done to manage their flood risk," Rob Vining, flood management practice leader for HNTB, said.
In addition to purchasing flood insurance, the Insurance Information Institute recommends that Americans prepare for floods by planning evacuation routes and keeping an updated inventory of their possessions.
