Businesses May Minimize Losses From Hurricanes

05/20/2010

Businesses can hardly afford to miss one day of revenue - never mind several - during the current economic conditions.

Therefore, it is more important than ever for companies located along coastlines to protect against damage suffered during hurricanes, according to a recent report by one major property and casualty insurer. In addition to purchasing insurance, there are several steps businesses can take to minimize losses.

Having a roof inspected and repaired can make sure that a building's first line of defense is in top shape, while tending to nearby landscape can reduce the likelihood of flying objects. Businesses should trim shrubbery and replace gravel with shredded materials, according to the report.

Using storm shutters can prevent windows from shattering - and allowing water or objects to enter the building. It is also important to pay attention and have an evacuation plan in place.

"In the event of a hurricane, monitor weather reports through broadcast or online sources and follow your emergency plans when necessary," the report said. "Remember, personal safety is most important."

Business interruption insurance is included in many property or package policies and covers companies for the income lost following a disaster.
