Staying focused can help all motorists hoping to avoid collisions and keep their auto insurance rates low.
It's especially important for inexperienced drivers, whose tendency to get distracted makes them responsible for more accidents than any other age group. With this in mind, NASCAR driver Trevor Bayne and one major life insurance company have partnered up to educate young drivers about the dangers of distraction.
Bayne, driver of the No. 99 Out! Pet Care Toyota, and Petty Driving School hosted a 2.5 hour program at Cincinnati's Woodward Career Technical High School to discuss this issue.
The event began within a classroom setting and was then taken to the school's parking lot. Once outside, students were able to practice the safe driving skills they discussed in the classroom.
"Whether it's on the racetrack or the road, the stakes are high if I don't focus," Bayne said. "That's why I'm talking with students today to help them understand the importance of safe driving."
Sixteen percent of distracted drivers involved in fatal accidents in 2008 were under age 20, according to the U.S. Department of Transportation, while 12 percent of such motorists are between age 20 and 29.
