Homeowners Can Reduce Risk of Storm Damage

7/3/2010

People who are living in coastal zones and other storm-prone areas can take some basic steps to reduce the chance of having to file home insurance claims because of damage from wind, water and debris.

These issues have especially been in the news this week now that Hurricane Alex, the first named storm of the Atlantic hurricane season is on its way. This has raised concern among many observers because of the risk that ongoing oil spill cleanup efforts in the region could be undermined or put on hold.

One leading insurance company is advising people that they can minimize the potential for storm damage to their homes with temporary protection, such as plywood on windows and coverings for patios and entry doors.

When a storm approaches, it may also be a wise idea to shut off power and water, while household mementos should be placed in waterproof containers or taken along if possible during any evacuations.

Another important step for people to take in regard to home insurance is to keep an inventory of household valuables, since this can be particularly useful if a claim needs to be filed.
