Government Continuing Battle Against Distracted Driving

7/30/2010

The federal government is continuing to take on the problem of distracted driving, with plans underway for a second summit this fall to focus on the problem.

The recently announced summit will build on last year's event, which drew industry leaders, public officials and safety experts to discuss ways that distracted driving can be reduced. Statistics indicate that 6,000 people are killed yearly in crashes involving drivers who were texting or using their cell phones at the time.

According to Transportation Secretary Ray LaHood, this year's event will be held on September 21 in Washington.

"Working together, we can put an end to the thousands of needless deaths and injuries caused by distracted driving each year," said Secretary LaHood. "By getting the best minds together, I believe we can figure out how to get people to put down their phones and pay attention to the road."

Even if an individual is lucky enough not to hurt or kill somebody in an accident they caused through distracted driving, one consequence of their actions will typically be years of higher auto insurance premiums.
