Fireworks Can Cause More Trouble Than They're Worth

8/12/2010

In many parts of the country, fireworks are an annual rite of summertime fun. However, people who fail to take the proper precautions when handling flammable and potentially dangerous materials may find themselves dealing with unwanted home insurance claims - or worse.

According to the National Fire Protection Association, fireworks cause more than 22,000 fires each year, including 1,400 structure fires and 500 vehicle fires. The organization added that these fires, along with other damages caused by fireworks, amount to about $42 million in direct property damage.

The report noted that 46 states permit some type of consumer fireworks, with only Massachusetts, New York, Delaware and New Jersey banning all of them.

"There is no safe way to use consumer fireworks. To prevent injuries and fires, we urge people to attend public fireworks displays put on by trained professionals," said NFPA president James Shannon.

For those who do choose to shoot off their own fireworks, launching them over a body of water is one somewhat safer method to follow. Also, small children should be kept at a safe distance from fireworks at all times, while those who shoot them off should avoid doing so in areas with heavy woods or brush - particularly if recent weather conditions have been very dry.
