Earl Causing Watches, Warnings Along East Coast

The approach of Hurricane Earl left some doubt as to the extent to which the East Coast would be affected.

Now, the entire coastline for North Carolina and a portion of Virginia is under a hurricane warning, while Delaware is facing a watch. The difference between the two weather declarations may not be clear to some, however.

According to the National Hurricane Center, an area under a warning is expected to experience hurricane conditions, which include winds of 74 mph or greater. Meanwhile, a watch indicates that it may be possible that the affected region will see similar circumstances.

Hurricane Earl is expected to come near the North Carolina coast sometime on Thursday night. By Friday morning, it may affect Delaware.

In light of that, residents in those areas may consider preparing for the storm. Doing so, according to the Federal Emergency Management Agency, includes having multiple escape routes from a region and developing a disaster kit.

Such a kit should include any important documents, such as home insurance policies and medical prescriptions. People are also recommended to have a supply of food, water and a portable radio.
