The past week has been filled with news items that help illustrate the importance of carrying the right home insurance protection and knowing what to do in case a claim must be filed.
For example, a natural gas explosion in the San Francisco area made national news this week by killing at least four people, injuring a number of others, and destroying several dozen homes. At the same time, wildfires have raged in Colorado in recent days, causing additional property damage.
Also this week, the official peak time of the hurricane season got underway, with weather experts warning citizens - especially along the East Coast - that the annual storm danger is still very much alive.
Amid such threats, the Insurance Information Institute (III) recently reminded homeowners of some basic steps they can follow to ensure a smooth claims process if and when the time comes. For example, people should take photos of damaged areas and be able to provide their insurance agent with contact information if they must evacuate an area.
Another thing for homeowners to do is be prepared to give their insurance company an inventory that includes information like the date a valuable was purchased and how much was paid.
