Report: Hurricane Season Not Over by a Long Shot

9/23/2010

Home insurance customers - especially those living along the Atlantic Coast - may want to take note of recent reports predicting that the 2010 hurricane season will continue to remain active in the coming weeks.

According to Weather Services International (WSI), a total of 18 named storms are likely to occur in 2010, 10 of which would be hurricanes. Of that total, six are predicted to go down as intense hurricanes, which are considered category 3 or above. The peak part of the Atlantic hurricane season began earlier this month.

If the figures from WSI turn out to be accurate, they would exceed the average number of storms set over the past 15 years, and would also exceed the average between 1950 and 2009.

"After a relatively slow start, the tropical season has gone 'supernova' during the past few weeks, with five major hurricanes occurring within the last three weeks, a historically unprecedented event," said Todd Crawford, chief meteorologist of WSI.

With many parts of the country experiencing severe weather events in recent years, it makes sense for homeowners to be up-to-date on their insurance coverage and to take precautions that range from inventories of valuables to adding storm-proofing upgrades to their property.
