Massachusetts Latest State to Ban Texting Behind Wheel

9/27/2010

As a new anti-texting law takes effect in Massachusetts this week, motorists in 30 states will now be legally prohibited from engaging in one of the most common forms of distracted driving.

Under the legislation, which takes effect September 30, Massachusetts residents will face a $100 fine if they are caught texting behind the wheel. The law allows subsequent offenses to carry fines as high as $500, and offenders will also face the possibility of having their driver's license suspended for up to 60 days.

However, the provision does not expose violators to higher surcharges on their auto insurance premiums. Still, higher premiums are a fact of life for those who cause accidents for any reason, which is why motorists are still advised to be wary of this added financial burden.

Another part of the new Massachusetts law mandates a driver safety class for anyone who commits three violations over two years that can produce surcharges on their auto insurance premiums.

Regardless of their state's distracted driving laws, motorists have numerous reasons to put the electronic devices down when they get behind the wheel, such as saving lives and avoiding the property damage caused by accidents.
