Report: New Technology Could Benefit Motorists

9/30/2010

Motorists in New Jersey may soon find themselves benefiting from new technology that could help them avoid accidents while saving time and money on their auto insurance rates.

According to a Bloomberg News report, the state's Turnpike Authority has awarded a $652,000 contract to En Pointe Technologies for a system that will alert drivers to potential traffic jams as much as 10 minutes before they actually occur.

The report added that the system has been tested on both the New Jersey Turnpike and the Garden State Parkway, two roads that are known for their heavy traffic volumes. Bloomberg added that the software is also being used in other countries, such as Singapore and Sweden.

Areas of heavy traffic frequently cause higher auto insurance premiums because of the large number of accidents they tend to have.

Looking ahead, researchers are working on a variety of different technologies to try to keep motorists safer, including automobile systems that function like radar by alerting motorists seconds before a potential collision with an object or other vehicle.
