Motorists Reminded to be Wary of Children on Roads

10/7/2010

Public health advocates have been advising children to walk to school in recent years, in part because it is seen as a tool to help cut down on obesity rates.

In fact, a coalition of parents, teachers and community leaders even observed International Walk to School Day in early October. To help make communities more pedestrian-friendly, groups like Safe Routes to School have worked on initiatives ranging from building sidewalks to working for new traffic laws requiring drivers to slow down in school zones.

This year's International Walk to School Day is also being observed in conjunction with First Lady Michelle Obama's Let's Move! campaign, which aims to encourage more active lifestyles among children.

For children who do have more active lifestyles, one benefit in the coming years may be lower health and life insurance rates brought on by a lower risk for chronic medical conditions like diabetes.

From an auto insurance standpoint however, motorists are reminded that with more children walking to school in some areas, they should be more careful than ever to avoid accidents and distractions while behind the wheel.
