New Efforts Eyed to Lower Obesity Rates

10/12/2010

Policymakers around the country have been exploring increasingly creative ways to try and reduce the nation's obesity rates while also encouraging better health in general among the population.

In fact, this month's issue of the Economist notes that along with ongoing efforts by First Lady Michelle Obama to convince the restaurant industry to limit the sodium content of its foods, more federal action may be in the works.

For example, the magazine cited the possibility that the Federal Trade Commission will act to curb the marketing of fat- and sugar-laden foods to children, while also noting that the Food and Drug Administration is working on new labels aimed at helping consumers make dietary choices. Still, the report noted that food companies are also under considerable pressure to develop products that people will actually want to eat.

With that in mind, one possible solution for those struggling to maintain healthy eating habits could be to research some new cooking techniques or to take a class that could introduce some new diet options.

Those who do have success with their diet and weight loss efforts will find a number of benefits ranging from a potentially more active lifestyle to considerable savings on health and life insurance policies.
