Liver disease may claim more lives than previously thought

11/2/2010

People with major health conditions, such as heart and cardiovascular disease, frequently end up being charged higher life insurance premiums as they are considered a bigger risk to cover. Cancer and diabetes are two other conditions which are frequently cited as ailments that result in increased coverage rates.

Recent research, however, indicates there may be more conditions that can be added to that list. The Mayo Clinic says mortality rates for those with liver disease may be underestimated.

Mayo Clinic gastroenterologist Dr. W. Ray Kim says liver disease is a major cause of death in some segments of the population.

"Of course, the most common cause of death for adults is cardiovascular disease and cancer," says Kim. "However, we found that liver disease is not far behind in terms of being number four for people between the ages of 45 and 64 years."
Experts say those who are obese, have type 2 diabetes or high cholesterol are at a higher risk of developing liver disease. A balanced diet along with regular exercise can help reduce the chances of such illnesses.
