Take Time When Selecting an Insurance Agent

11/3/2010

With every major change in life comes a need to review insurance coverage. Just as there are several different types of coverage, there are various agents to chose from. It's important to select an agent that understands a person's goals and situation.

The National Association of Insurance Commissioners (NAIC) reminds consumers there are two types of agents: captive and independent. A captive agent works solely with one insurer, whereas an independent agent can have contracts with multiple companies.

Furthermore, the NAIC says consumers should check up on the credentials of a prospective insurance agent. It's important to ensure the individual is licensed and has strong references. When talking to the insurance agent, it's important not to feel pressured into making a decision or purchasing a product.

Such steps will help ensure a person feels comfortable with their agent and that they are a reputable sales person. It's also wise for consumers to follow up with their state insurance department to see if there have been any complaints filed against the company. Offers that sound too good to be true probably are and should be avoided.
