In today's world of laptops and Blackberries, it's possible for some people to feel as though they are always on the go and end up not getting enough sleep. The result of fatigue can be devastating, while behind the wheel.
A number of tired motorists get behind the wheel every day. In fact, the Sleep Foundation says nearly 40 percent of poll respondents admitted to falling asleep while driving. Another study by a major car insurance company found almost 20 percent of fatal accidents involved a drowsy motorist.
A representative from the insurance company, Kathleen Marvaso, says many people don't realize the devastating consequences under-sleeping can have.
"This data underscores the importance of educating drivers on the simple, yet effective steps they can take to prevent a possible tragedy," says Marvaso. "Unfortunately, too many drivers have adopted the 'I'm tired, but I can make it' mentality, often to their own peril or to the peril of others."
Motorists who get into accidents are likely to see their auto insurance premiums shoot up. Getting enough sleep at night can help ensure one doesn't make a mindless and potentially fatal error while behind the wheel.
