Homeowners in areas prone to severe winter weather conditions should be aware of the types of coverage they'll need to protect their houses when storms hit.
The Insurance Information Institute (III) notes that flooding, for example, is not covered by home insurance policies, but many people may not be aware of that. The National Flood Insurance Program, however, can provide assistance in that area.
III senior vice president Jeanne Salvatore notes some regular policy features.
"Standard homeowners policies cover winter-related disasters such as burst pipes, ice dams, and wind damage caused by weight of ice or snow, as well as fire-related losses," says Salvatore.
Additionally, homeowners insurance can also provide coverage for items lost or stolen.
The III has tips for homeowners who are looking to reduce the impact of snow and ice on their houses. It recommends cleaning gutters and installing gutter guards. Doing so will allow water to flow freely instead of building up and then overflowing.
Furthermore, clearing trees and other objects that could break and hit the house or a window should be done.
Before the weather changes too much, homeowners should check their policies to ensure they are completely aware of what is and isn't covered under their plan.
